When I first arrived on Labuan in 1956 there was no school for boys. My Mum had to teach me by correspondence from Australia. After 1 year she got sick of this I was sent to the Convent. (What was it's name?) I was the only boy in the convent. After another year they opened up the new Government English School. I went there for the next 2 years. 1959 and 1960. Then we came home to Australia. I was 10 when I came home. Is the school still there? There was a Malay school at one end of the playing field and the Government English school at the opposite end.

There is still one convent school in Labuan, named St. Anne, another mixed school is St. Anthony, might be the 2 schools you have been studying before. St. Anne school is located in front of the Botanical Garden. I myself was student in the St. Anthony school.

I think it was definitely St Annes. The name rings a bell. I was too young to go to St Anthony's which is why I had to go to St Annes. I was the only male in the convent for the year that I was there. Laughing
I will look for it when I come back.

It was St. Anne's Convent School. My eldest sister attended St. Anne's
until 1966. I was an ex-student of Gov't English School. Our Principal
at that time was Mr. Valentine--excellent headmaster & teacher.
My malay teacher was Mr. Osman. It was the good old days...
good foods for lunch. There was a chinese woman who had the best
dried hot chili squid. The curry & peanut buns were excellent, the baker was hainanese. His buns metal box was attached behind his bicycle.

Gov't English School was the top school in Sabah, academically, during Mr. Valentine's tenure.

Nice to hear from ex-anak labuan. Keep in touch. 8)
