Once bridge is built, first thing to go is the duty free status. Same as what happened in Penang.

I think building a bridge, could be unnecessary. Maybe more ferry can help to solve transporting problem between labuan and KK.

Excuse me friends, may i share something on this topic, i findout that your discussion is informative. In my visit to Sabah last 2006. I travelled from kk to labuan via Menumbuk. We boarded a high speed outboard powered boat from Menumbok to Labuan. A trip was exciting by then. Talking about the bridge construction, I think it will be good for the people who are most of the time going/coming out from Labuan, not only facilitate and shorten their travel time but the commercial activities will surge to enure to the benefit of Labuan economy. Sad to say, for those people engaging in the maritime transportation business, for sure their livelihood will be adversely affected by the completion of the bridge.
have a good day thank you baham |

Perhaps I heard rumor somewhere that there'll be 3 new ferry accommodate the necessity.
Kingfisher is right. If the duty free status still here after the completion of the bridge, smuggling of duty free item will be the 'main' business income in Labuan. Well, that's my opinion. International tourist doesn't drive to Labuan, they fly to Labuan, thus the extension of the runway in the current airport might accommodate the need to provide superior facilities to boost tourism in Labuan.
Domestic tourist partly drive from mainland to Labuan, via Ferry from Menumbok. Perhaps the bridge might save time and cost of driving to Labuan. But then, I'll miss the experience of driving long hours from Menumbok to KK. Photo Portfolio : Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see links. |

in economic development, sometimes we will lose some of the memories of the past/historical site etc. Let us look what China has done, there is an on-going dam construction in the Yangzi River, i think. The moment the Government will put the same into operation, the river water will surge as a consequent some of the historical places will be submerged under water. Life will be affected for those living near the river bank. The unearthed relics and artifacts will be in oblivion. In correlation, I think there are group of people who are reluctant to see the push through of the bridge construction, they are not totally oppose to the economic progress but for reason that there will be changes in their daily lives especially those living in Kampung, for those who loved to travel by sea from Labuan to Menumbok surely they will miss the ferry services and for those who are currently operating ferry services, they will lateron find that the operation will be no longer profitable and practicable after the completion of the bridge.
thank you |

I dont know if expatriates will have interest choosing Labuan as their second home if the bridge will be built in the furute. The bridge will make Labuan no difference than any other state in Malaysia. From what I read in the Malaysia My Second Home brochure, I admit that expatriates are among the economic mover in the place they stay. Simply because of their currencies and few other 'cash' requirement in applying Labuan as their place to settle down.
Just my opinion. Photo Portfolio : Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see links. |

But on the matter that the people will not miss the period of the ferry services, may be you still have a point on it, if they never reminisce that for the past decades the ferry services were once part of their lives. thanks |

Not only there is peace and tranquility but most importantly we have a cultural link as we belong to the same race, the Malay Race. I had visited some white communities or countries, I felt uncomfortable to live with for a longer period of time, for reason that i am not adapted to their way of life. Unlike in Malaysia, i felt not so stranger to mingle with the local residents. Starting from 1960 to early 80s the members of our family were already trading with the Rich Chinese at the Labuan Pier. From the stories told, the malay culture is not so strange to me. have a good day thanks |

dear frens..
i agree if they built the bridge..why not..u can use it 24/7..no hassle no dazzle..ferry service in labuan..well..tell me, who ever had a good memories while riding a ferry..for sure everybodies prefer the bridge even if u had to pay the same amount as ferry service, to use the bridge. but make sure it has at least 4 lane motor way. but i'm not totally agree if yhe duty free status is lifted..well hey...we, the people who actually live in labuan, needs entertainment too..i like to drinks ...every one is please to come to labuan yaa..as long as u behave urself.. younger everyday... ;-) |

In Penang, even they have bulit the Penang Bridge they still maintain the ferry services because the demands are still exists. We might think that people do not want to use ferry anymore because it takes time to reach to our destination but believe me, the bridge is not free and we have to pay for the toll. But, who cares as long we can reach our destination soonest possible and we don't have to depend on the weather conditions. Presently, we have to import vegetables from mainland and with the bridge, we can shorthen the delivery time.
Why do we need to build the Link Ke 2 in Johor whilst we have Tambak Johore already...the reason is only one..i.e to boost up economy in JOhore even they have to sacrifice for certain things.... |
