DIRTY LABUAN
Labuan Council decided to initiate a waste recycling program. Good for them.
Unfortunately maybe it was not too well though out. Money was spent in sending flyers to households advising them that collection points would be set up on such and such a day and scrap metal, paper and plastic would be purchased. The points were duly established and if our point was any judge of success, I fear it was a waste of time and money. I would be happy to hear that it was an outstanding success, but I doubt that I will. So, how can Labuan Council recycle waste and make a profit doing so and clean up the island in the process? Making attractive to those “Tourists†whose lack of presence is forever being bemoaned? The Council has just cut the grass along Pulau Buah, well, rearranged the debris would be a better description as at least the weeds hid most of the rubbish that is strewn along the roadside. Pulau Buah does not have heavy pedestrian traffic, so it follows that the rubbish, paper, plastic bottles and tins in the main, are dumped from passing vehicles. Now since the council pays good money to cut and hack at both the grass and rubbish, would it not be sensible to arrange the grass cutting contract so that 3 guys walk behind collecting paper, metal, plastic and glass? This could then be recycled and pay for the collecting. Just a thought. Next pass laws with regard to dumping rubbish…… And ENFORCE them. More money in fines as the hard core dumpers pay for their actions. Have civic pride as a mandatory subject in schools and brain wash the young with something useful. Finally give some thought to the present type of bin offered. It recycles chemical containers and that’s good. But it needs a lid that can be shut tight. Keeps out the flies and scavenging monitor lizards; dogs and cats too. It also needs holes drilling in its base to allow for drainage. The next move would be to make rubbish sorting compulsory for every household, as is done in some European countries. Paper, plastic, glass and metal and finally biodegradable stuff. So in one fell swoop we place 4 bins together and have them colour coded. Biodegradable gets collected as usual and the other 3 bins once every 2 weeks or so. Less stuff for the land fill, ready sorted and resalable scrap, cleaner roads. Better public hygiene and civic awareness. Ah well. One can but dream…… By the way if anyone wants to know a simple, very, very cheap, low energy idea for a proven international market business, which can be done from home. Thus giving the kampongs a rung on making foreign currency and gaining wealth for the island, get someone with some vision to contact me. I will help them for free. |

Here, Here Kent,
I fully support the idea of recycling our waste, but what sort of example does the authority set when you only have to look at the bins situated near our prestigious schools (Che Wen, SMK. etc) always overflowing with excess strewn all over the place. is this the image we should give our youngsters? our future possble MPL employees? I fear not, come on you people with the responsiblity and position. Set an example. You know the saying !!!!!! when the buying stops.... the killing will too.... Labuan 2020 can we do it? yes we can..... |

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I wonder if anyone in the Perbadanan reads this forum and if they could shed some light on the topic, or even our MP for that matter?

RE: DIRTY LABUAN
The only way to stop the use of plastic is to refuse plastic bags from traders ( keep a fabric one in your car) and use a metal water bottle and refill it - also, outlets like KFC & MacDonalds should be resonsible for the waste that their products generate - verey poor corporate social responsibility!
Why is abbreviation such a long word? |
